The Raw Minimalism series | Fool Dost worked with MasterG India on sample development and patterns for the collection. MasterG India is an organisation in New Delhi, India, training women from underprivileged areas of the city in garment making, construction and design. They give women the opportunity to have high level professional training that would not normally be available to them, so that they can pursue better paid jobs in the garment industry, be as skilled as the average man in the industry, and have the ability to set up their own business. Small batch production was done by our partner studio in New Delhi where a small team of highly skilled kaligarhs cut and stitch the collection with high attention to detail. Please contact us should you like to know more about MasterG or our parters
Whilst travelling the vast and varying Indian states founder, Laura Halliwell, was drawn in by the nonchalant elegance of dressing, for her it was the epitome of divine-feminine cool and intuitively she put pencil to paper.
Captivated by the cuts, drapes and endless colour combinations of traditional Indian wear, the aesthetic collided with her own tendency towards minimalist design to create a perfect storm.
The making of the collection had to be mindful and contribute to the betterment of lives in a region notoriously exploited. Knowing that fashion production can be a catalyst for empowerment, Laura sought meaningful organisations to partner with to bring the designs to life. What unfolded took trust and collaboration, to be ‘foolish’ to enable the creation of a new path. She had to make friends, (in Hindi, ‘friend’ is ‘dost’), with the fool inside herself, and so, Fool Dost came into being.
Fool Dost creates offbeat elegance through mindfully crafted womenswear. Treading carefully to make considered pieces out of an aesthetic inspired by traditional Indian cuts, bohemia and natural form. Minimalist, wearable silhouettes are made in natural fibres by the hands of a unique collaboration of makers in India, where each garment is gathered up by deeply rooted intentions.
